31 01 2010

Nearly one month in and still going strong. Today a trip to Techniquest in Cardiff Bay. We took Huw with us - 'Huw' is a bear from Sunshines Playgroup who spends the weekends with his friends, and this was Abi's weekend with 'Huw'. We have to complete his diary with pictures ready for them to go back in to Llanfoist Fawr Primary School tomorrow.

Techniquest is the hands on Science Centre for children of all ages based at Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay. A must visit for the curious.

30 01 2010

I had hoped to play my first game of field hockey for very nearly 12 months today. Unfortunately a frozen pitch in Whitchurch meant that the game was canceled!

I was left to sort out the removal of Sian's car for which we received the princely sum of £30!

28 01 2010

There would/should have been a photograph before this, it would have shown me at 8.15am this morning changing a flat front tyre in the IB car park. I got out of the car to a hissing from the front driver side tyre.... a bit of a tell tale noise when accompanied by a definite sinking feeling.
I set to work with some help from our security guard and his big boots and had the tyre changed by 8.40am!
Following a day dipping in and out of cheap tyre sites looking for a bargain at the end of the day I set off into Cardiff and stopped at the first tyre establishment that I found ( Discount Tyres (Cardiff) Ltd).
I must say that the staff there were pleasant and well informed and provided an excellent service and in good time. I eventually had all 4 tyres changed for safety and security and drove home a very satisfied customer.

Today's main shot is just another day at the office - note Twitter on right screen and Outlook email (constant) on left screen. The screen stayed like this for the bulk of the day as I went from meeting to meeting!
At the end of the day I took my middle daughter Emily and the grandchildren for the weekly shop which ended with the above shot. A perfect end to a busy day......tomorrow is another day.

A few weeks ago I received a comment on my main blog from Laine a the Macmillan Dictionary Blog. Their blog has been running a week for each of the countries which make up the UK and this week is 'Welsh-English Week', each week they ask a group of bloggers from the country concerned to put up guest blog posts and today it was my turn..... above is my blog post with the link ( this link will change to other posts through the week).
Please feel free to leave a comment at the Macmillan Dictionary Blog for me :-)

Today's picture was taken this afternoon on the 'Village Green' at the IB in Cardiff. It is a shot of the inaugural meeting of The 'IB Peterson Symposium Blog' group - this is a collection of like minded educators and technology users who will be working with the wider IB community to begin discussing issues ahead of the Symposium itself later this year.
The Peterson Symposium which will take place in Cardiff has as its theme ' learning technologies and their impact on teaching, learning and curriculum development' with guest speakers Christopher Dede ( Harvard) and Nancy Law ( Hong Kong Universtity).

It was an amazingly beautiful and sunny day in South Wales today and we along with many other families with small children addicted to the BBC CBeebies have visited Cardiff Museum for their 'Charlie and Lola' Exhibition Green Drops and Moonsquirters - on the work of Lauren Child.
We had a great day in an around the world of Lauren Child, this was topped off by visiting other galleries including the must trip to see 'Dinosaurs' in The Evolution of Wales Gallery.
An excellent day out preceded by some Twittering with education friends on the use of a Personal Learning Network. - thanks @snbeach, @allanahk, @bcrosby for the vibe :-)

The above shot was taken Wednesday 06 01 2010 at the height of the UK's decent into arctic temperatures, some 17 days later as we are now in positive daily figures however, our snowman hasn't totally disappeared as you can see from today's flickr365 shot! You can just about make out the circumference of the original snowman outline in the frosty grass.

Today being a Saturday I was out and about and happened to bump into @timmillwood and also @kellymillwood and baby Joshua ( born 09 01 2010) - apparently Joshua is finding himself quite ambivalent to the difference between day and night - hence the bleary eyed look!

While out shopping I couldn't resist snapping this picture of the front cover of a this bargain book that I spotted in a local bookshop! Comment unnecessary I believe?

22 01 2010

Yesterday's object was of course the automatic stapler that has been the must have gadget in our office over the past few moths since I brought it in from home. The stapler had been a Christmas present a few years back and was being used in my home office. However it has gained a new lease of life with my work chums enjoying it so much.
At the end of a busy work day today I called in at a local supermarket and happened to see some CD's that I couldn't resist - these would really make my journey to work and listening on the iPod complete and turn both car and mp3 into Jools Hollands 'Later', the albums purchased today:
The Noisettes - Wild Young Hearts
Paolo Nutini - Sunny Side Up
and
Stereophonics - Decade in the Sun

Hey I'm back in Second Life attending virtually the Educause Conference coming from Austin Texas from 19th-21st January in Austin Texas the conference is called:

Learning Environments for a Web 2.0 World

I haven't actually been in Second Life for quite a while now, however it's good to see dedicated educators here. Yup! I am the bald headed one with the pointy ears in mid shot - Pippy Ballinger online again. To come in and join the discussion follow this slurl.
Later in the evening the Horizon Project 2010 Report was released during a joint conference and Second Life event

The shot of today is of the '3D glasses geeks' (@pj23harry and @jamesfk) at the Odeon Cinema in Cardiff Bay prior to going in to see Avatar in iMax. It was the second viewing for @pj23harry however I believe that this viewing added subtlety to the 3D imagery from the master - James Cameron, really showing off the images of an alien planet to its best - Bravo.

Abi aged 4 with her birthday cake

Sunday 17th January is a 'red letter day' in the Harrington household as it is the birthday of our grandchildren Abi ( Abigail) and Jaycob. Their mum Emily set a difficult schedule for today with a party for 10 of Abi and Jaycob's at 1.30 followed by a family celebration at 4.30.
Jaycob aged 3 with his cake

It was lovely that the family celebration included Abi and Jaycob's great grandparents ( Jean, Margaret and Gerald) grandparents ( Debbie and I) and their aunts ( Sian and Laura) plus of course their mum Emily - special mention must be made of next door neighbour Sophie (Y6) who helped out all day - thank you Sophie :-)

Following the snow eventually comes the thaw - this has been happening since the cold weather abated yesterday. The geography of Abergavenny has the River Usk which collects water from The Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains flowing to the west of the town.
Below is the flow of water coming through the main old bridge out of the town - for us geographers the flood plain is acting as it should, acting as a safety valve for the river by allowing river water to spread out and flow away.
The effect of this is to make for some temporary difficulties such as trying to walk along the path north along the river as you can see!

It also makes for great pictures of fast water flow! Also you can see that with red sandstone making up the majority of the low ground our river flows red when in flood.

The Haitian earthquake is still in our thoughts, for those in the UK below is the link to the UK Disaster Emergency Committee appeal, I would urge everyone to give whatever they can to the appeal.

Isn't it odd what you find lying around in your house - the 'Space Hopper' above has moved into our office/spare room and is presently behind me fixing me with its soul-less eyes! It was apparently someone's Christmas present. My 'Ddraig Goch' Dylan II attached as ever to my rucksack.

It is Friday and while enjoying a pleasantly warm(er) spell of weather I am this evening missing the
BETT2010 Teachmeet Takeover in Olympia this evening with many of my Web 2.0 friends - I look forward to catching up with some of the presentations and will post a link to this when it arrives online - Have a great evening at TeachMeet Talkeover!

Sorry for a food based shot today however this delightful Coronation Chicken wrap plus a latte ( the way to Ddraig Goch's heart!) came in at £4.50 and was delicious! Thanks to @jamesfk -James Forbes Keir for taking the shot with his iPhone today.
Following my theme yesterday I would like to draw your attention to the UK Disaster Emergency Commission Haiti Appeal this is mainly for UK readers, however I feel sure that donations from anywhere in the world would be appreciated.

IBO online workshop manager's temporary office for 13 01 2010
( the work based laptop - on piano is a shocker and keeps losing wi fi connectivity!)

More in my thoughts today are those killed and injured in the Haiti earthquake (7.0 magnitude 21.53 GMT 12 01 2010) which hit last night. These natural disasters which hit often vulnerable communities without warning bring home the self indulgence of our small worries about a few centimetres of snow!

12 01 2010

Above is a curious sheep which wandered up to see me this afternoon when I stopped at a local farm on my way home ahead of some more of the white stuff! As you can see we still have plenty of snow.
As I had left Cardiff early I was in time to get to my grandchildren's pre school group at Llanfoist Fawr Primary School and with their mum, meet them, and take them home.
Above is Abi's peg and below is Jaycob's ( don't they grow up so quickly ( on 17th January Abi will be 4 and Jaycob 3 !!!)

Lunch!
I would hate to say it however today's blog post has been the toughest yet..... it has been one of those days plenty to do, however I am keen to avoid more weather related blog posts hence this snap of the packet of Wotsits that I had with a latte for lunch today. Shame I here people say, that is the spelling of course, I personally hate the 'Toys R Us' and 'Wotsits' spellings that occur in advertising, while I agree that my own spelling and grammar is not brilliant I do despair of the this use of language!
Today it appears that many people decided to start work following Christmas and weather breaks - result traffic chaos and gridlock, with only one exit from the industrial estate onto the M4 sadly this was the scene at 5.35pm this afternoon, this was an improvement on 5pm when you would have been hard pressed to get out of our own carp park!

10 01 2010

Trolley pushing view Mrs H ahead left with list - I rarely use a list!
This is quite a regular Sunday morning activity for 'Chez Harrington' we were a little apprehensive this morning with more bad weather and 'panic buying' occuring across the UK ahead of 'the possibility' of further heavy snowfall - Why do people panic buy bread, eggs and milk? Does everyone start making omelettes, cakes or bread and butter pudding at time of crisis?
We actually found shopping to be lighter than expected with no clear signs of panic buying, it is also true that the people living around this store in Brynmawr are a good deal hardier than some - we did actually see one gent going into the store wearing a pair of Havaianas without socks - Brrrrrr!!!

Outside of the ASDA ( Walmart UK) store in Brynmawr which is around 1500ft above sea level the current winter is pretty obvious, yes that is a 6ft (2 metre) pile of snow which has been moved to allow parking. This snow has now been in place since December 22nd 2009!

09 01 2010

I couldn't resist this shot today, in the centre of Abergavenny depicting its history as a farming and market town, is a bronze statue depicting a farmer with an ewe and her lamb. This is timely as lambing time is upon us in the UK, the snow surrounding the statue shows the conditions that many farmers will be enduring at present.

The bonus shot of the day below is Joshua James Millwood (8lb 3oz) born at 2.05 am on 09 01 2010 the much anticipated son of Kelly and Tim Millwood, and excellent job both of you, what a beautiful person to have brought into the world today. He looks a lot like you Kelly time will tell if he develops Millwood traits :-)

Welcome Joshua James Millwood b 09.01.2010
